3 Days in Melbourne

I have always wanted to write about places I have visted but due to the lack of skills in writing, I have this fear of not doing the places any justice. I'll give my best shot, though..

I have been to both Sydney and Melbourne in Australia few yrs back and if you have a chance to fly to Australia, I would say you should go to both places. Unless if you only have a week to spend and a more limited budget, then of course I would recommend Sydney as that is the home of the iconic Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Darling Harbour and other landmarks that Australia is famous for.

Melbourne has a different appeal, it is more laid-back and it is definitely a perfect vacation if you have more time to spare as it is in a closer proximity to various wineries and of course the Great Ocean Road.

Melbourne Highlights

1. Shopping (this is always at the top of my travel list) - If you only have 1 day to shop in Melbourne, start with Bridge Road (Richmond) which is where some of the factory stores are (ie - Esprit). Then, spend the rest of the afternoon at Chapel Street, a popular hang out amongst the young, hip & trendy locals. Other shopping highlights - Brunswick Street (Fitzroy) has an Alannah Hill outlet (#296) and Chadstone Mall is probably the biggest mall in Melbourne. If you are right at the CBD, then it is probably worth checking out Collins Street. There is also DFO but it is quite a distance from the CBD. If you are looking for bargain souvenirs, drop by at Victoria Market.

2. Food - Like KL, Melbourne has quite a variety of food choices although if possible, skip the Asian food as coming from KL, you will most likely be frustrated. Nevertheless, do you know that Australia has the largest Greek population after Greece? Naturally, Greek food is a must try if you do not have any plans to visit Greece anytime soon.

This dish is literally set on fire when it's served! I can't remember what it is called but it is one of the Greek's specialties

Next, don't forget to drop by at Lygon Street (Carlton), home of the Italians in Melbourne! They serve great pizzas, authentic lasagne and pastas. Note to Muslims, ham is considered as basic pizza toppings so becareful when you place your order. When you are at Lygon Street, remember to stop by at Brunetti's. They serve the prettiest cakes and pastries and one of the richest hot chocolate ever!

Isn't that pretty?

3. Attractions - If you have just 1 day to spare, go for drive up to the Dandenongs. It will take you through the forest with pine trees and there are a few craft shops at the top. Remember to buy the things you like over there because they are one of a kind and I don't think you can find them at the city centre. Oh yeah, remember not to have big breakfast as you should save some tank for the delicious pies!

This is me (3 yrs younger), trying to resist the beautiful crafts at Dandenongs

Next is the Crown Casino. This is where the posh hang out and obviously gamble. If like me, you are not allowed to enter the casinos in Genting, why not take a peek in this one? ;) Otherwise, go window shop at the high-end boutiques like La Perla. If you have extra cash to splurge, try out one of the seafood restaurants there. They serve fresh giant crayfish, that is a good choice unless if you are a carnivore then of course the Aussie outback steaks is the selection to go for.

To digest the scrumptious meal, take a stroll down Southbank. Enjoy the fresh air and beautiful view at the river bank.

4. Sports - Melbourne is of course the home of the Australian Open so if you happen to visit during the tournament, go check it out. Otherwise, I think it is worth checking out the Australian football which is a cross between American football and Soccer - I think so! Or you can also catch the Wallabies play - ok, I am a bit ignorant on rugby so excuse me if I am wrong with this one!

5. Nightlife
- Like other western countries, business stops after 6pm but this would be the beginning of a happening nightlife. Australians are very very well-known with their strong drinking culture so there are many nightspots available. The most accessible and convient spot for visitors I would say is the Fed Square. Few nightclubs and bars are available here and this is especially packed on Friday and Saturday nights.

Federation Square at night. It is within walking distance from the train station, Collins Street, Southbank and the Botanical Garden

Besides nightclubs, Melbourne is also the home of a few theatres and operas. Get the brochures from your hotel to know the latest schedules.

There you go.. since this is already a pretty long post, maybe I will write another one on Melbourne best-kept secrets. Enjoy your holiday!

MATEEEEEE! So you've been to both Melbourn and Sydney, but chose to write about Melbourne. No wonder, there is so much more to talk about. Melbourne is WAY better than Sydney in so many ways.
